A Girl’s Best Friend
Right from the very beginning it was evident that Spot You Later (Buzz) was going to be both a consistent super star but a quirky one at that. He has always been a member of the family starting his career owned by the Hutterd family with Ellie Myers (nee Muller) as the jockey, alongside Claire Hutterd who was involved in a lot of the early training. The spotted pony was fast a common name in the Taranaki showjumping scene and holds a very special place in the Hutterd family. Ellie recalls that even at a young age Buzz never wanted to touch the rails “I used to have to wear a back protector because he would try so hard that his wither used to smack me in the chest” - and nothing has changed.

After starting his training with Ellie, it was then Laura Hutterd’s turn to experience Buzz’s cheeky but oh-so-fun character. She describes her time with Buzz as “magical, he has an unshakeable confidence to jump and absolutely loves his job” and it was noticeable as they continued to collect many results under their belt including winning the Waitemata World Cup Final Pony Grand Prix that Buzz then when on to win a few years later with Parys Marshall his current rider – also from Taranaki.

Parys describes Buzz as a rebel which we can only guess is referring to his quirky character that never fails to keep his riders on their toes. She does also go on to say that Buzz is very “street-smart” acknowledging the experience the 18–year-old pony has had over his long and successful career, that is both a testament to his riders and himself.
This will be her last season with Buzz and Parys hopes to enjoy every round she has left with him referring to Buzz as her “best-friend”. Watching them together at home on their family farm it is easy to see why as Buzz happily stands untied with the lead-rope placed over his neck, and a cruisy smile on his face while Parys goes about getting him ready to ride. |
When asking Parys what her biggest achievements are with Buzz are she mentions among them winning the Egmont A&P show Pony Grand Prix two years in row – we wish Parys and Buzz all the best for a similar result at the Taranaki Showjumping & Showhunter Grand Prix show coming up on the 25th of January.
